هل القراءة مهنة؟ هل هي هواية؟ كيف تعرّفها؟
مانغويل: هي كلّ تلك الأشياء، لكن قبل أيّ شيء، هي فنّ. نحن مخلوقات قارئة، أي أنّنا طوّرنا، أكثر من أيّ حيوان آخر، حسّاً لقراءة العالم، ولقراءة النّاس حولنا -لذا نقرأ المشهد الطّبيعي حولنا، السّماء، نقرأ وجوه الآخرين، ومن ثمّ طوّرنا المخطوطات في بعض المجتمعات لتدوين وقراءة تجاربنا. هي جزء من تركيبتنا الجينيّة من أجل البقاء. وبنفس الطّريقة الّتي يبني بها الرّياضيّون أجسادهم للتّمكّن من الصّمود في الماراثونات أو رفع الأثقال، يتمكّن القارئ المتمرّس من الغوص أكثر في عمق النّصّ والاستفادة منه بشكلٍ أكبر. لكن مرّة أخرى، نحن نعيش في مجتمعات، وقد أصبحت برمّتها تقريباً، استهلاكيّة لدرجة أنّ المجتمع نفسه لم يعد يريد احتضان القراءة أو تشجيعها. لأنّ القراءة ليست فعلاً مستقلّاً عن الوظائف الفكريّة.
لقد حلّل بعض علماء الأعصاب عمليّة القراءة وقالوا بصددها إنّها “معقّدة جدّاً، ولو نجحنا في فهم ما يحصل في الدّماغ عندما نقرأ، ما يحصل بالضّبط، سنتمكّن من فهم فعل التّفكير”. فالقراءة والتّفكير مرتبطان ببعضهما البعض. لذا، يشكّل المواطن الّذي يقرأ بشكلٍ فعّال مواطناً متأمّلاً مفكّراً ويطرح الأسئلة. أمّا المجتمع الاستهلاكيّ، فلا يريد لذلك أن يحصل. كلّما طرحت المزيد من الأسئلة، كلّما قلّ قبولك للدّعايات.

Is reading a profession, a hobby? What, how do you define reading?
Manguel: It’s all those things, but above all it’s an art. We are a reading species, that is to say, more than any other animal, we have developed the sense of reading the world, and reading people around us – so we read the landscape, read the sky, we read the faces of others, and then we developed scripts in some societies to record and read our experiences, so it’s part of our genetic makeup to survive. And in the same way that people who train to build up their body are more capable of resisting a marathon or picking up weights – the reader who trains him or herself is more capable of going deeper into the text and benefiting more from the text. But again we are, we live in societies… almost all societies that have become consumer societies to such point that the society itself does not want to foster reading. Because reading is not independent from other intellectual functions.
There are neurologists who have analysed the process of reading and who said that it’s so complex and that if we understood what happens in the brain when we read, what happens exactly – we would understand what thinking is. Reading and thinking are associated; so, a citizen who reads, but reads effectively, is a reflexive thinking questioning citizen. And consumer society does not want that. If you ask questions, you won’t buy publicity.
